Training through new eyes

As our mentoring focus begins moving laterally through Steps, Level 4 and above, we are seeing all sorts of opportunities to strengthen foundation behaviors. This time in having another trainer re-teach them while in challenging environments.

What this has done for the trainers is to have them re-visit their own training of these behaviors (right now, Level 2) making sure that the criteria is not sacrificed.

Our mentoring sessions in December are all focused on behaviors.

Here Jan is seen strengthening Nadador's L2 StandStay. Firmer, longer, NO movement of paws. Good trainers never hesitate to go back and re-teach, remind, and/or review in order to make any behavior Better, Longer, Stronger, Higher or Faster.

The progression expands: teach the behavior, test it cold, generalize it BMO, use it in combination with vested exposure, someone else re-teach the behavior to the dog, someone else test the behavior and generalize it. We're seeing the difference between "doing it" for someone else and being confident and comfortable responding to someone else with latency and fluency. Public manners. Our FD dogs and their trainers are stepping up to the plate! Hats off to you all!
